Steve McGhie’s Journey Through Politics and Community Advocacy

Our team of journalists speak with Steve McGhie, the Victorian Labor Member for the Melton District.

Prior to his entry into politics, Steve McGhie worked as a paramedic for 15 years. While servicing the western suburbs he was raised in, he came to develop a strong understanding of the area and its people. Steve also served as the Secretary of the Ambulance Union for over two decades before he decided to retire in 2018, with no intention of pivoting his career to politics. However, a call from then-Premier Daniel Andrews convinced Steve to run for the 2018 election. Steve is now in his sixth year as the Member of Parliament for Melton.

Over the years, Steve has seen the local community change dramatically, with growing numbers of residents bringing in a variety of cultures. As one of the fastest-growing local government areas in the state and the country, it is predicted that the population of Melton will increase by 100,000 over the next 10 years. To accommodate these numbers, Steve aims to ensure that the right facilities are available for new and existing residents to live and work in Melton. As well as the new hospital, City of Melton residents can look forward to having more schools, a TAFE college, and more jobs available to them in the coming years.

During his time in Melton, Steve has been strong on supporting young people. From early learning centres to secondary schools, Steve has been working to ensure that there is sufficient funding from the state government to build and improve educational facilities in the area. Construction will soon be underway for a new secondary school in Cobblebank as well as a primary school in Weir Views, which will help accommodate the growing number of school-aged children in the Melton district. Steve is also passionate about continuing to secure grant funding to community groups who offer important services that enhance the lives of local young people.

As a parliamentarian, Steve looks forward to seeing the state of Victoria become a fairer and more liveable state. For the Melton electorate, Steve aims to support our growing communities, in hopes that families and younger generations will find the City of Melton to be a great place to live, study, and work. This means ensuring that the local residents are well-educated, have access to good health services, and can live affordably. ‘There's a lot to do and it never stops. It just never stops regardless of whoever the politician is. We've just got to continue to deliver.’
